You start off with 4 units of your choice that you rolled from the character gacha, and you can choose between (usually) 3 options of combat, event, or rest. There IS an overarching story, and the game is separated into acts with each act capstoned by a trial that is usually a hard map with an objective that doesn't involve routing the enemy, followed up immediately by a boss fight.
