Git annex sync|assist didn't pull/push from/to remotes. It happily said 'ok' but a 'git log ...' didn't show any updates. Very strange.
I guess the lesson here is to make sure to stop the assistant before messing with the repo manually and doing a 'git annex add' before doing *anything* else - to be sure the files are secured into the annex. The rest may then happily go wrong. 🙃
