Gravitational wave observatories like LIGO/Virgo and KAGRA have detected the cataclysmic merger of black holes and neutron stars. But it's believed that the current crop of observatories should be able to detect another dramatic event in the cosmos: the collapse of massive, rapidly spinning stars, becoming black holes. Researchers simulated collapsing stars and predicted that any within 50 million light-years should be detectable by LIGO.
