US regulators came close to breaking up Microsoft back in 2001 due to Microsoft's own conduct, but the judicial system "somehow" ended up working in Microsoft's favor upon appeal.
I'd say that most likely happened due to the "good ol person's" main way to win friends and influence: know who to give a pass to and when.
