Having seen a bit of this ssystem IRL, there’s something that really pisses me off about people like this though. They don’t try to exploit the system, they just mindlessly pay the bills that show up in the mail like they’re dutiful serfs. You can try to hook them up with patient advocates, systems to defray the cost and they either balk because they don’t wanna “stoop” to using “welfare” or they’re too nice and think they’re stealing from the ‘poor who really need it’.

You just wanna shake them and get them to snap out of their silliness. Just because the hospital sends you a bill in the mail doesn’t mean you’re righteous when you unthinkingly pay it.
