Paying attention to birds has really made me appreciate how valuable truly tiny bits of forest and other wild-ish spaces are in the suburbs. A little wedge of forest, when observed for 20 minutes on a gloomy late fall day, can be at least temporary home to 8 different species of birds, and 15 individuals. That's in a quiet season, on a day I wouldn't have considered especially promising. And that's not even getting into all the squirrels and chipmunks, mice and voles, countless other beings too small or too hidden for me to see... I always knew that every bit of habitat mattered, but I notice it in practice in a different way now.
