The day after the Notre-Dame fire, French president Emmanuel Macron promised that it would rise again in the next five years. Remarkably — thanks to engineers, architectural experts, and about 1,000 artisans from around the world — it happened. GQ's Joshua Hammer took a tour of the resurrected cathedral and spoke to some of the people that brought it back.
"Inside, [American carpenter Hank] Silver showed me marks on the wood left by the axes. Instead of the smoothness of timber squared in sawmills, the beams had a rough, undulating quality. Each imperfection reflected the vagaries of the grain, the shape of the axe, and the hewing style," Hammer writes. “These axe-hewn frames are more beautiful, more interesting, and deeper, because the human work leaves its traces,” Silver told Hammer.
