A very unusual visitor to our area, this juvenile Roseate Spoonbill was a Hurricane Idalia and climate change refugee. It was roosting at a small pond near me with a variety of other waterbirds, including Great Egrets, Double-crested Cormorants, Black-crowned Night Herons, and a couple of Green Herons. Spoonbills use those bills to feel for and catch small invertebrates and fish below the surface. Although they are listed as of low conservation concern, their habitats are vulnerable to climate change and profligate development.
I ended up taking something like 750 pictures of this bird, so stay tuned...
