I'm pretty new to it, but I've been using Ubuntu for several months and really like it. Good functionality and an experience not too different than what I'm used to with Windows.
You'll find a lot of opinions on which distrobution people like, but from what I've heard, and my own experience, Ubuntu is on the more noob-friendly side of the spectrum. I've heard great things about Mint, as well.
Linux is a little picky about what computer hardware you use, so check to see if your device is compatible. You could also test this booting from a USB drive.
