This makes me think of different hypotheses on ancient human warfare: skirmishing before the main thrust of battle, the fighting isn’t always consistent along the front line - there are gaps, battle undulates back and forth, each side occasionally pulls back and musters before reengaging the enemy.
But then again, maybe I’m just seeing what I want to see (?).
