One of my mom's and stepdad's cats has this very unfortunate combo of dense, long and very fine fur. After a while it gets so tangled it causes the cat discomfort. Brushing hasn't helped (she is outdoors a lot). So they took her to the vet and had her shaved.
She's being kept inside until she regrows enough of a coat to go outside again, but she seemed really happy when I visited. Looks like the haircut was a big relief!
She also looks really funny, and kept chasing her tail today. 😁
