So apparently high gain and chords with notes on the G, B, and high E strings cause the fluttering beat frequency sound I'm trying to get rid of.

I suspect actual guitarists know this?

Anyway, I've been playing around and have found an alternative approach to get the sound I want, with layering and arrangement. I'll listen again tomorrow and see if I still like it.
