Twelve years ago, I took my then-86-year-old mother on a drive from Asheville down to Lake Lure. Along the way, I snapped a pic of a covered bridge crossing the Broad River, midway between the towns of Bat Cave and Chimney Rock.
Hurricane Helene destroyed those towns. And yesterday I found a video with a few frames that showed where the I-beam-supported bridge once stood.
In related news, after two and a half weeks, my sister and her partner in Swannanoa finally have power (so heat, stove, laundry, shower... all the good things are back). And cellphone service has been restored, although there is no data access yet.
Their well pump works but they need to get the water tested. Fingers crossed there.
Also good news: a road crew from Tennessee repaired their mountain road enough for them to safely use it up and down. Portions of the upper road are still dirt, but it is drivable.
All this comes just in time: the mountain will see freezing temperatures for the next few nights.
