I used to work as a Patient Account Rep for a clinic so I worked directly with health insurance companies and let me tell you… I legitimately had to get on blood pressure medicine and I attribute it to me working with insurance companies.
It was also emotionally draining, because I would spend hours on hours trying to get answers for an insurance claim, only to hear that they couldn’t pay for anything, then have to be the one to tell patients that we can’t do their literally life-altering surgery to make their quality of life easier unless they pay 10s of thousands of dollars because the company they already pay to do that denied it.
One guy couldn’t work because his back was messed up and needed surgery. He couldn’t pay his insurance premiums because he couldn’t work. He couldn’t work because he needed surgery. He couldn’t get surgery because he couldn’t pay his premiums. It was a vicious circle. His insurance company said they’d pay the $5k surgery… if the customer paid up his remaining $70 premium. Otherwise, it was all on the customer.
Fuck.
