The unreal engine store certainly has a lot of stuff in it these days. I imagine the Unity store is near parity with it.
But, Vile is looking to bring his vision for a world to life as a game. Rather than making a game using the pool of pre-built assets / levels from the asset store that are someone else's vision for a world.
Vile's comment about flat images has more to do with, we aren't limited to only models that can be rendered in the game engine. (a fix camera allowing for pre-rendered backgrounds)
Essentially the TODO list involves a lot of, 3d character modeler + texturer + animator (in engine), 3d/2d environment artist (background and static objects, pre-rendered), and a 3d item and special effects creator (in engine).... and lots of other stuff.
