A problem with mental health policy in the U.S. is those who have no reason to feel ashamed are made to feel ashamed, and those who have valid reasons to be ashamed are not ashamed: There is nothing shameful (i.e., stigmatizing) about having an unchosen, no-fault, mental illness and associated symptoms which say nothing about an afflicted person’s character. On the other hand, shunning persons who are homeless due to symptoms of mental illness, sending them armed police officers rather than medics in emergency situations, and further traumatizing them by putting them in jail cells rather than hospital rooms is shameful yet widely accepted. As noted by Dr Kay Redfield Jamison, what is commonly called stigma is really discrimination.
