Yes, it was always like this. We need to stop pretending otherwise. I grew up white evangelical in a culture steeped in white evangelical values. I will never forget the sorry witness white evangelicals — on the whole — gave to the Christian gospel as segregation ended and people of color began attaining long-denied rights.
Instead of leading the fight for racial justice, white evangelical churches were almost uniformly bastions of reaction and opposition
