It struck me yesterday that we will probably see the end of the ATM in the next 5-10 years. Aside from the cultural and practical issues of a cashless society (for an other post), if this happens I personally will have lived through the whole lifecycle of this machine.
I remember distinctly the machines first appearing in the British high street in the early 80s, how novel and futuristic they were. And my first debit card at 15 with which I could take out a maximum of £25 / week, funds permitting.
Now I barely use cash, or even my card, although I still carry them. Working in IT I am all too aware of the fallibility of electronic devices.
Are we now too dependent on an infrastructure that is actually quite fragile (to failure but also to attack)? Was it ever actually more robust?
