FWIW, have developed my own methodology for this. I always make sure my efforts fit into one of four modalities that can inform either forward or backward.
1. Possibility - what is possible?
2. Feasibility - is it feasible?
3. Usability - is it usable?
4. Scalability - is it scalable?
For the last two years I spent most of my time between 1 and 2, now moving into 3 and 4.
