What we experience in daily driving is norms, not rules. In many cases, the norm aligns with the rule, but where they diverge, knowing norms will avoid incidents more than knowing rules. As they say: better to be alive than to be proven right.
I’ve seen so many cases where rules are broken routinely and in the same way around here, and knowing how to handle those cases have prevented more incidents than knowing the rules. I know that at certain intersections oncoming traffic will turn to cross my path even when I have the right of way, so I slow down before I enter them. I know that some people will merge in and immediately traverse several lanes on a highway onramp, so I give them space. In these cases, I may be *right* but I will crash nonetheless unless I understand local behavior.
