exactly! If done properly, you will simply forget that you are there and experience things directly. To be thankful, to be with others, to experience joy and beauty, without ever thinking "what would others say about me" or "well I'm better than that" or any of the other intrusive thoughts about one's peers - it's a wonderful thing.
I see people sometimes talk about "giving up control" but that's not it exactly. You still know right and wrong, and you still make decisions, and you're still you, you just don't think about it and what flows naturally from you is the best of yourself.
Case in point; I just called my parents early for 4th of July, and had the best conversation I may have ever had with them because I managed to be self-forgetful in that way. I am often awkward in my conversation (my timing, my word choice, etc etc) but on this occasion everything snapped into place like it was meant to be
