It's hard to say exactly, on one hand you've been frens for 25 years, but on the other hand, you ghosted them years ago already. If they make your life miserable, and even more so if you could not help them, then it is rather pointless to try to make amends.
From what I've read of this and the other replies, it's probably best to not contact them again, or limit it heavily.
