Its a really good Q. the debate between absolute & relative poverty has been widely exercised in political philosophy circles over here, but interestingly there is some interesting data on the mental health impact of relative inequality (in that those who are 'comfortable' but relatively poor find themselves more dissatisfied than their material existence might objectively warrant).... its an interesting issue & reveals much about what is important to individuals.
