I think social media is creating the problem, or at least is adding more people or bringing together more people than would otherwise subscribe to these views. If you are patriotic, perhaps a fan of military things, football, you will be shown memes saying things like "Stop international aid and spend the money on our veterans/nurses/homeless instead". Not in itself inflammatory but leads people into 'them and us' thinking.
