In the middle ages, it was a fairly well-accepted anatomical theory that the uterus was partitioned off into several sections. In general, anatomists *loved* partitioning body parts off into little bits, and the uterus was no exception.
There were various theories as to what the seven cells of the uterus (which, we reiterate, do not exist), actually did. In general, they were thought to relate to sex determination of the foetus.
