Sauron (once named Mairon) is just a step down from the gods, like an angel. Gandalf (Olórin) is a rung lower in the godliness chain. If Sauron is a 3/4god, Gandalf is a demigod, as it were. Sauron is very good at crafts, serving the smithy god. Loves order! But apparently loves power more. He winds up joining Morgoth and being responsible for all the secondary evil. Breeds orcs, wages war against elves, etc.
