Hard to beat a swiss army knife. Classic design, lots of cool factor with the extra tools. Perhaps a model like the Recruit.

Downside to the Swiss Army knife is that it's a slip joint and could close on fingers.
A small fixed blade won't have that problem. Simple, more durable, easy to clean and sharpen. Something like the Becker Remora.

Or you could go with a locking folder, but sometimes the lock mechanism is too stiff for smaller hands to depress.
