So digital has wildly altered the economics of capturing video, especially at the low end. It doesn't matter on a big budget feature film (where the overall cost of production greatly exceeds even extravagantly wasteful film use), but for people learning cinematography who need room to experiment, digital is a godsend. In still photography, OTOH, learning on film can actually be CHEAPER, since film cameras are much less expensive.
