One of the earliest American invocations of "fake news" is William Randolph Hearst decrying presumably fake news stories about mysterious airships in 1896-7. An interesting parallel to the present day is Hearst's papers simultaneous role in manufacturing public consent for US military action in the Spanish American War (it did not "cause" the war.)
