By the end of my 32-year career in policy analysis, I concluded the cost of software licensing and time devoted to creating pretty graphs and reports has been a mostly trivial activity when compared to the earlier days of typewriters and graph paper. And, that activity has diverted resources from hiring people and dedicating time to advancing new knowledge. Those who split the atom and landed on the moon did not make discoveries because of Microsoft, SAP, or Workday. They also understood the fundamental science and math better than those who today rely on a black box. But, business software vendors have persuaded universities and researchers to divert a lot of money to their products.
