I went down to turn off the sprinkler and admire the field corn. It’s so happy with the soil and the weather! Some of the stalks are tillering, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the biggest ones start sending up tassels next week. The two rows of dry beans at the top of the corn plot are twice as big as the beans in the beds, and they’re starting to send up viney tendrils. I think the corn and beans will outcompete the remaining “weeds,” which are mostly chicken scratch grains and white clover.
The bean beds got top dressed with good compost earlier this week, ahead of the hot weather, and I’ve been soaking them with the sprinkler too to make sure the nutrients get down to the plants. And it’s working, they’re a much happier shade of green and they’re starting to take off.
The beet beds are also in the sprinkler radius, and the first bed is sprouting. I’ve been angsting over parsnip and carrot seeds for so long, it’s a real relief to see seeds that are eager to sprout.
