This reminds me of the women's rights movement in the 70s. Traditionalists wanted to reform abortion law. Others, who were further left, wanted to repeal it entirely and make the state have no say in it.
Roe v. Wade was a compromise between the two positions, which allowed abortion up to the end of the second trimester. Then it was later gutted by the Hyde amendment anyway.
