I was at a community theatre about five years ago, working on a production of Into the Woods. The director had taken some liberties with the presentation; it was very dark, steampunkish, and a few line modifications pushed it deep into R-rated territory.
I asked the director if we'd get in trouble for making changes, and he responded with the biggest flex I've seen:
"I called Mr Sondheim and explained my vision. I've got a letter of approval if you want to see it."
I never questioned that director again.
