the fork called Glitch-Soc allows this. It's one of the main features and is maintained by some of the same devs.
You just have to find an instance that's good for you that uses Glitch.
That being said, Mastodon devs are well aware of glitch and I'm sure know about that feature and purposefully have omitted it for whatever reason.
Of course they can change their mind in the future.🤷♂️
