So the sages said, the second Temple was destroyed (about 1950 years ago) not because of the more obvious cardinal sins (unlike the first Temple). One reason they gave was sinas chinam (baseless hatred). A word for what we also know from academic history. There was much division into factions among the Jews, each faction against the other.
