I don't agree with her on everything, quite often she makes me roll my eyes, so a bit more for me a stopped clock twice a day, but still, she is also right about a lot too.

Modern parents, Birbalsingh claimed, have “been infantilised”. This phenomenon has been partly shaped by parenting literature and general advice. Parents are not able to “take ownership of their own child” and lead them in being potty-trained, she said, adding: “They feel helpless that they’re not able to do it. So it’s the child who has to lead his own potty training. And then he ends up going to school and he hasn’t been potty-trained. “Middle-class parents might then say, ‘well, that doesn’t happen to us’. If you are able to afford a nanny, or if you have two parents in the home, you might get away with some gentle parenting. But for families that are under financial pressure, social pressure, don’t have two parents in the home, they simply aren’t able to do what you might be able to get away with,” she said. “And the culture that is created by this literature, written by middle-class people — they don’t realise the absolute destruction that it causes for the working-class family.”

Parents who want their child to succeed have to teach them at home, she said. On social media Birbalsingh said she is regularly told by parents: “That’s not my job, that’s the teacher’s job.” “My position is that’s mad. If you’re sending your child to a normal state primary school, the teacher, not through any fault of his own, will have maybe two minutes a day to spend one-on-one with your child doing reading. Those families that spend 15 or 30 minutes a day reading one-on-one with their child — think about the advantage that they’ve got over your child,” she said.
