Japan took it from China, they use to be pretty close to China and took them as a influence and inspiration. Kanji would have two pronunciation, one is their own and the other is closer to Chinese pronunciation, it changes based on how you use it. So it’s just the way it is. I know a some Japanese, while I’m not able to pronounce everything I read, I can understand like 50% of them with all the kanji.
Some new Chinese words though, are from Japan. Many modern Chinese words are carried over from Japan, probably because they’re the first Asian country to civilized in western style.
