It just hit me - like slapped me hard in the face - that a miner who finds a block "gets" his block subsidy / newly-created coins merely by stating "I now have dis many more coins okay?" He just **says** the coins exist.
The rest of the network allows this, because they all agree on the rules of the system. But new bitcoins aren't found, they are written into existence.
The beauty of this had evaded me previously...
