Here's how I was raised to do it:
Fill a shallow pan with about 2" water.
Bring it to a boil.
Using a spatula, stir the water into a swirling vortex (the exact term my family used: swirling vortex)
Crack the egg into the middle of the swirling vortex
Cook for 1/2 -2 minutes
Use a spatula to remove the egg and let it drain
Put the egg directly on a piece of buttered toast, or in a bowl with cut up buttered toast
Add salt and pepper to taste
No vinegar
