I also support supporting older tech that's otherwise destined for landfill. However, one aspect that bears repeating, "HTTPS keeps the URLs, headers, and contents of all transferred pages confidential." (you linked it from your post, but I wanted to highlight).
Add to that being on the internet with software older than TLS support is unsafe for many other reasons.
