The problem here is that the machine is laying a pattern of bricks relative to bricks, prioritizing the pattern over the form. By comparison, a slightly smarter machine would place bricks relative to the form, approximating the pattern.
I'm also a big advocate of non-periodic tilings for exactly this reason... You can "bend" them as necessary (to cover non-planar surfaces, for example) and trim tiles to fit, without offending the eye, since there's no repetition for the eye to measure against.
