Police/security at the Mall of Amerikkka in Bloomington, Minnesota are now using facial wreckognition technology. The mall is just outside Minneapolis, where the tech is prohibited.
The police chief says it won’t be used for making arrests… which is pretty clearly a lie, as he cities the January 6 investigations as an example of facial recognition success, and the press release claims it will be used to identify trespassers and “persons of interest.”
You can bet such “persons of interest” would include folks like the Black Lives Matter protest organizers who the mall had charged with felonies several years ago, after police shut down the entire mall rather than tolerate a protest in its rotunda. And the mall already regularly harasses and detains young people who it suspects of breaking its curfews and age limits, as well as poor transit riders using the light rail and bus station there.
Good guideline for the times we live in: if you’re going to a shopping center for any reason, wear a mask!
