The many different Linux based operating systems AKA distros can be confusing and overwhelming to newbies. I have tried most of the main ones and don't know where they all are in maturity at this point. I have been using https://fedoraproject.org/ for the past year because it works best with my hardware. If you like the experience of Windows, you will want to run the KDE desktop environment with whatever distro you choose.
