My current MiniDisc 💽 collection in chronological order. “The Random MiniDisc” is a MD I cycle-rec through everything I want to listen to in that period so it’s not fixed, depends from the mood.
I’m now waiting for 10 MDs coming in from the UK to expand my library further.
I’m totally addicted to MiniDiscs! Their being real, physical, the noises of the system, the absolute absence of algos, ads and personalized recommendations, the absence of tracks and whole albums that come and go because of the licensing deals , the absence of cloud systems that rely on a network connection that is not always available and the fact that you can listen to them without being interrupted by a call or a notification of any sort are the main points that make them so enjoyable.
Plus I just love to choose and curate my music. I like to take the time to record my own selection on the discs in real-time-only mode, put all the marks between the tracks, insert the disc & tracks titles, prepare the labels, print them down, cut and apply them to the correct disc… It is a process that is so pleasing and rewarding: you get to actually listen to the music while making them and I think this gives value back to the music.
The current streaming model is so broken because music suddenly has no more value: it becomes something that is a given, a background you don’t pay attention to most of the times, it is something you quickly consume and discard. You don’t even choose anymore what to listen to, you just outsource your own preferences to a remote computer that knows nothing about you and about music and its history.
MiniDiscs give life back to music because they brings the human variable back into the experience. You are the algo, you create your selection, with all the nuances that just a human being can infuse to it.
Yes, I’m totally and absolutely addicted to MiniDisc because they soothe my soul and music.
