He had the number one show because of a convergence of service to a specific set of very rich people and catering to the worst impulses of mostly rural and suburban white Americans. It takes a lot of money to make those repulsive views seem acceptable and mainstream. The money is still backing the project, it's just looking for a new figurehead.
