The early internet was fine, and then when it grew it declined. Same with every system, even Facebook and Twitter.
Small is good, easily self regulates. Big attracts nefarious and is hard to regulate.
Mastodon's edit working well is consistent with the above.
I'm not saying anything about edit, only pointing out that your logic should not be taken to say anything about it either.
