My understanding was that they were actively saboing GTK so that it wouldn't provide that functionality the same anymore. Perhaps I misread?
anyways - just write your apps in QT is probably the lesson here. GTK doesn't play nice with other DE's from my experience. Maybe it's gotten better in the last 4 years, but last I tried in 2020 GTK on anything other than gnome looks like hot garbage and was annoying to setup.
In my mind, what they're doing is offloading that work onto someone else which, once again, makes it harder to develop things for the linux desktop and further creates fragmentation - something people consistently use as an excuse to not develop for linux and, well, they're not wrong and I hate it.
Hopefully they either wake up or implement something that makes this worth it - because right now I feel really bad for my gnome brethren.
