A simpler, more objective one:
Losing control of your ship is an offense. Even if you did it because of equipment failure, improper maintenance is an offense.
Why? Because losing control of a ship the size of the Empire State Building can kill people, if it hits something. And they did hit something, causing $100s of millions of damage and killing half a dozen people.
The crew are, unfortunately, involved in a criminal investigation.
