This screech was the bane of my existence as a kid... but the initial handshake sound of dial-up internet actually represents something pretty cool:
- Each pair of modems has a completely unique connection through various analog telephone lines (many of dubious quality). That means each call has a unique "soundprint" that can disrupt data transfer for various frequencies...
