I mean, the Ukrainian boarders of today are like from what? 1991? Somewhere along those lines. Moreover they were generally established by the soviets for administrative purposes with only a secondary regard for populations in those areas.
If we go down the "its Ukrainian Land" then we also need to give Crimea back to Turkey. Its more important to look at who lives on the land than to what a map or a piece of paper says.
As for what language people speak, its not what informs what ethnic/cultural group they belong to. Its like saying anyone who speaks American English is instantly American and fully immersed in the culture of Americans. Obviously thats not true. Sure many Ukrainians, due to proximity among many other things, speak Russian; but those in the west of the county also shared closer cultural and ethnic ties to Russia than that of their Ukrainian country men.
